Joint physical custody, parent–child relationships, and children’s psychosomatic problems

Abstract Aim The prevalence of psychosomatic complaints among children and adolescents appears to be increasing. At the same time, numbers joint physical custody families are rising across Western countries. This study aimed investigate relationship between post-separation care arrangements (joint vs. sole custody) children’s risks problems, while considering potential mediating role parent–child relationships. Subject methods Based on data from Family Models in Germany (FAMOD) study, stepwise linear regression models seemingly unrelated were estimated for a sample 473 aged seven 14 living either or families. Results Children reported significantly fewer problems than Furthermore, arrangement was associated with better relationships, although only mother–child related complaints, partially mediated association complaints. No corresponding could found respect father–child relationship. Conclusion risk distributed unequally families, as suffered arrangements. Because part this explained by quality relationship, relationships other family members appear important factors consider when seeking promote health
